In 2005 Chartis predicted that niche component vendors in the Operational Risk Management (ORM) software market would “exit the market or be acquired” and that the acquisition wave would start in 2005 and continue through to 2008. So far, these predictions have proved to be accurate. Software vendors have made the following key market announcements over the last 12 months:
- June 2005 – i-flex acquired the intellectual property rights for Capco’s Operational Risk Tool Suite.
- June 2005 – FRS agreed to acquire the key assets of Providus
- August 2005 – SAI Global Limited acquired Anstat Group (including Lawlex)
- January 2006 –Financial Objects agreed a takeover deal with Raft
- March 2006 – JP Morgan pulled the plug on Horizon.
- March 2006 – Hearst Corp. agreed to acquire a 20 percent stake in Fitch Group. The acquisition included Algorithmics
- April 2006 – Asparity Decision Solutions completed the acquisition of the J-Port suite of operational risk tools from Portiva
The moves made in the operational risk management (ORM) software market in the last 12 months are typical of a fragmented and maturing software sector. Most of the announcements are distressed sales or exits.
There are, however, notable exceptions. Success stories are emerging and we are starting to get some clarity about the potential long-term winners in this market.
