The inaugural Retail Banking Analytics50 ranking and report builds on Chartis’ Retail Finance Analytics50 study, previously part of our STORM research. In defining retail banking for the purposes of this research effort, we took a commonsense view: retail banking is a series of activities centered on consumer finance and consumer banking.
Chartis’ analysis of the market and technology landscape reveals several defining trends:
• The most dramatic change to the external environment in emerging markets is the rise of identity platforms, and the impact this is having on retail banking operations in developed and emerging markets. As it becomes harder for retail banks to operate across jurisdictions, cross-border and truly global retail institutions are becoming increasingly rare.
• Retail banking has been transformed by the rapid rise of FinTechs. Payment technology is now a significant element of the most profitable businesses.
